What is teeth cleaning?

Teeth cleaning is the process of cleaning the stain, plaque and tartar that has formed around the teeth for various reasons. Thanks to this process, these harmful structures in the gums around the teeth are removed and achieves ideal oral hygiene.

Who is teeth cleaning done?

Tartars can form around the teeth and gums due to reasons such as poor oral hygiene, irregular brushing or not brushing at all, smoking, excessive consumption of junk food during the day. This can often cause bad breath and/or bleeding and gum recession. Even if there are no such complaints, if tartar is detected by the dentist, it should be cleaned. In this way, oral hygiene is maximized.

How is dental calculus cleaning done?

Teeth cleaning is done with tools called cavitron, which is made of a metal piece and prevents the teeth from heating by removing water from the tip. These tools, which are used to break the dental stones and remove them from the area with vibration, do not cause any damage to the teeth. Local anesthesia is usually not required during this procedure. During this process, which takes approximately 45 minutes, there may be slight ache in the teeth, but absolutely unbearable pain does not occur. In patients with unbearable pain, regional cleaning is performed in 2 or 4 sessions under local anesthesia. After the tartar is cleaned with a cavitron and the teeth and gums are completely cleaned, the stains on the teeth are removed with a special paste and brush, and the teeth cleaning process is terminated.

What should be considered after teeth cleaning?

It is recommended not to eat anything for half an hour after calculus is cleaned and the teeth are polished with a special paste. Because this paste, which contains fluorine, strengthens the teeth for the first 30 minutes. Teeth may bleed for a while after tartar cleaning. This bleeding passes in a short time and is not an important condition.

How often should teeth cleaning be done?

Although it is said that teeth cleaning should be done every 6 months, the important thing is to go to the dentist for the routine control in every 6 months. If your dentist detects tartar during these controls, tartar cleaning should be done. However, dental calculus does not form in the teeth of people who pay great attention to oral hygiene in 6 months, in such cases there is no need for calculus cleaning. And then polishing process will be sufficient.

Is teeth cleaning a painful procedure?

Teeth cleaning is not usually a painful procedure. However, patients with sensitivity in their teeth may feel a very slight tingling during tartar cleaning.

What should be done to prevent tartar formation?

It is ideal to brush the teeth twice a day, once before going to bed and once after waking up in the morning. Although it is thought that it should be brushed after breakfast, brushing your teeth as soon as you wake up increases your saliva secretion and allows you to grind foods more easily with the antimicrobials in the saliva. After brushing, cleaning the anterior teeth (6 teeth with canine teeth and 4 teeth in between) with dental floss, and premolars and molars with an interface brush of the diameter recommended by your dentist will help prevent cavities and calculus that will occur at the interfaces of the teeth. Ideal tooth brushing time is 2-3 minutes. After all these procedures, gargling with mouthwashes will greatly prevent the formation of tartar.

What should be considered when brushing teeth?

While brushing teeth, the brush is lifted at an angle of 45 degrees to face the roots of the teeth, and first 10 circular movements are made, thus removing bacteria and food residues. Immediately afterwards, these bacteria and food residues should be swept into the oral cavity by holding the brush perpendicular to the tooth and sweeping in one direction (upward downward, downward upward). Excessively hard and pressing brushing should be avoided, and the outer surfaces should never be brushed by making a back and forth motion.
